A Camper Trip to Save My Rebellious Son

Forty-five days in, and my son is starting to miss home.

We've already reached our destination and spent seven days by the southern coast. These past few days, the changes I've seen in my son have amazed me.

I'm a photographer. My son turned 14, and after starting middle school, what began as trouble focusing in class slowly turned into a refusal to study. The combination of teenage rebellion and severe school avoidance created constant conflict at home.

Later, I sat down and talked with him. Our conversation went like this:

"Are you really not interested in school at all?"

"Not at all."

"If you quit now, you might regret it later, and you won't get another chance to go back. Are you sure?"

"I'm sure."

I'm learning to be a father for the first time, and I believe many parents of kids going through rebellion can relate. If you force them, it only backfires.

I kept thinking: if I let this go on, by the time my son truly drifts away from us, he might never develop a proper moral compass. Compared to work and money, we stand to lose something far more valuable.

I made a bold decision.

To help my son get through this period and build the right mindset, I chose to leave my job, let him pause school, and spend time together — just father and son — traveling in a pop-up camper, side by side, day and night.

People say I'm wealthy and impulsive, but the truth is, I'm just an ordinary guy. To keep costs down, I picked up an entry-level pop-up camper, a TP06A with basic specs — nothing fancy, but the price was right. We eat and sleep in the camper the whole way, tightening our belts and making every dollar count.

From the moment he was born, I've watched him grow from a sweet, obedient child to a playful troublemaker, and now to a rebellious teenager.

Whenever I had time, I took him rollerblading, swimming, playing soccer, hiking — all I wanted was for him to have a healthy body and the right values for life.

I told my son:

"Life is bigger than the ivory tower of school. If you don't like it, Dad will take you to see the world."

We set out from our hometown, passed through a few cities, and headed south, showing him different places and cultures along the way.

Together we ran into the winter wind by the sea;

together we watched the sunrise from a mountaintop;

together we felt the passage of time in an ancient city.

I chose this route so my son could see more of the world, understand different ways of living, and then, when the trip was over, seriously think about what he truly loves.

We set the final stop of our journey on the southern coast, where a dream was waiting.

After thousands of miles on the road, we finally stopped by the sea, leaving the rush behind. In the quiet, I taught him photography, had him capture beautiful moments to share with his mom and grandparents, and helped him catch up on the schoolwork he'd missed.

I hope that after witnessing all the hardships of this journey and experiencing them with me, he will understand that my reason for wanting him to learn was never about getting top grades — it was about enriching his knowledge so he can face the challenges life will throw at him.

For the first five days or so, he still talked back now and then. I got so frustrated I almost gave up;

around day 20, he started warming up to me, even coming over for a hug sometimes;

by day 30, I could criticize him without getting backtalk, though he'd just grin cheekily;

by day 32, he was sharing his deepest secrets with me.

Now he's stuck to me like a barnacle every single day, and honestly, I'm getting a little tired of how clingy he is.

The photos and videos from this trip are something I want him to look back on whenever he faces hardship in the future, so he'll remember he can overcome anything.

Accompanying your child with love, helping them grow up healthy and happy — that is the greatest gift a parent can give, one that lasts a lifetime.

Respecting your child is the best way to help them become their best self.
