Buck's Story: A Truck Camper and a Soft Heart

My name is Buck. I wear sunglasses, slicked-back hair, a black leather jacket, and a silver chain around my neck. Anyone seeing me for the first time would swear I'm a biker gang veteran. But if I told you my biggest passion isn't riding Harleys - it's driving my hard-shell pop-up camper to take the whole family on road trips - you'd probably think I'm kidding.

The Toughest Look, the Softest Heart

My friends all say I'm a straight shooter who doesn't beat around the bush. I've bought two campers in my life, and both times I put down the deposit without telling my wife first. Then I'd go home and confess. And both times, I had to eat humble pie and be on my best behavior for two full weeks before she cooled off. But I have a rule: owning up to your mistakes is what being a man is all about.

After my first tow-behind camper, I upgraded to a hard-shell pop-up in 2021. Same story - didn't consult my wife. She blew up and declared, 'I can't live like this!' She branded our camper life as 'vagabond living.' But here's what happened: one, my apologies were heartfelt enough; two, the camper turned out to be so light and comfortable - closed up tight and slim, no wind blocking, driving just like a regular pickup - that now she's more hooked on camper weekends than I am.

Every week we do short trips around California with our two daughters and two granddaughters. Don't let the tough-guy look fool you - I'm a doting husband, a devoted dad, and the best grandpa those girls could ask for. I even pick the grandkids up from school in the camper, and our daughter and son-in-law come along on weekend getaways.

With my biker look and blunt personality, who'd guess I'm a good husband, a good father, and a good grandpa in my granddaughters' eyes? The camper has become my best tool for spending time with family. Last summer, before school started, I squeezed in as many Yosemite trips with the grandkids as I could. I love picking them up in the camper - the space is roomy, and the kids ride in comfort.

Built for Any Road, Ready for Any Weather

I drove big rigs for two years when I was young, so I know all about rough rides and cab noise. After switching to this TP07B Hard Sided Camper, I'm genuinely impressed by how smooth and quiet it is. Even with the hard-shell pop-up design, it drives as stable and peaceful as a stock pickup.

I use cruise control a lot on the highway, and it feels no different from driving my old sedan. The camper is lightweight, but the hard-shell structure is solid enough to handle dirt roads and gravel without a problem. What I appreciate most is the fully sealed seams - not a single leak in the rain, which is a huge improvement over my first camper.

Most pop-up campers create a lot of wind drag when closed and get shaky at highway speeds. But mine sits low and slim, cutting through the wind cleanly with better fuel economy. It holds steady even on long highway runs.

For power, I installed solar panels and an inverter myself, so electricity is never a concern. The batteries charge while driving, and at camp we have lights and phone charging without any issues.

For water, I carry portable tanks that cover daily washing and brushing. Cooking is simple with a portable stove. Since I often travel with the whole family, food storage is always a puzzle I'm still figuring out how to optimize.

Even though my wife wasn't on board at first, now she just kicks back and enjoys the ride while I handle all the organizing inside. I'm a neat freak - the camper stays spotless, everything has its place, and the slippers hang neatly by the door. When we set up camp, I lay out the rug first, then arrange the chairs and table, topping it off with either a coffee setup or a few wildflowers in a vase. My buddies say my campsite is always the tidiest one around. This habit keeps the camper comfortable and respects the campground environment.

In the Camper Community, I Found the Coolest Old Crew

I'm an outgoing guy, and through camper life I've met plenty of kindred spirits. One of my best pals is Walt - we both love Hawaiian shirts, red pants, and sunglasses. Back in the day, we were both die-hard Elvis fans with slicked-back hair, carrying boomboxes down the street. We were the coolest kids around. Now our hair's gone gray, but the backcombing is still there, and we've become the sharpest-dressed old-timers in the camper scene.

Besides Elvis, I've always admired John Wayne - that free-spirited, lone-ranger kind of life. That influence shaped me into a generous, always-ready-to-help kind of guy. In the camper community, I'm known as the guy who shows up first when a neighbor needs a hand, and the first to volunteer when friends throw an event. That reputation has made me something of a local legend around the campfire.

I was born in 1964. School wasn't my thing - I dropped out of high school and went out into the world. Later I rode the economic wave of the late century, drove trucks, ran small businesses, built rental properties... When I was a kid, I couldn't even afford a bicycle. Now I'm driving a camper across the country: one day listening to the Mississippi River roar, the next day disappearing into the Rocky Mountains to watch clouds drift through the valleys...

Besides camper life, I also take helicopter tours and hot air balloon rides... I enjoy every way of getting close to nature! For the life I have now, I just want to say: I'm grateful to be alive in this era, free to chase the life I want.
