Why I Ditched the Apartment and Moved Into a Truck Camper

To be honest, I used to daydream about the "camper life" —

I imagined packing light, heading out on weekends with my boyfriend, and driving a truck camper to the edge of the city, far from the noise. I also imagined loading all our belongings into a truck camper and living the "home is wherever we park" kind of freedom. A truck camper as home — easy and carefree.

I had so many beautiful fantasies about making a truck camper my home.

But back then, I rarely asked myself: Can living in a truck camper really help me escape the anxiety of urban survival? What happened to the people who actually live in truck campers? Whether in movies or online posts, most of what I saw was only one side of the truck camper life. The gap between ideal and reality is bigger than it looks.

Sitting in a folding chair on a wide open patch of land, music playing, staring at the stars — that was my first impression of truck camper life. Among those who have already made the truck camper dream come true, some have indeed found the relative convenience, freedom, and joy they were looking for.

To Save on Rent, We Moved Into a "Home on Wheels"

What's it like for two people living together in a truck camper? Three months ago, my boyfriend and I said goodbye to our rental apartment and moved into a truck camper. If anyone asks me whether it was worth it, my answer is: absolutely.

From driving our truck camper to the beach to catch a sunset, to celebrating my boyfriend's birthday inside it — for us, the truck camper carries not just the daily routine within reach, but also the blend of everyday life and travel adventure.

To outsiders, this undoubtedly looks pretty cool. On weekdays, we park near the office, wake up naturally, and walk ten minutes to work. On summer nights, the cool evening breeze drifting through the truck camper brings a natural, comfortable temperature. Come the weekend, we drive away from the city to expand our map of life, taking spontaneous camping trips. In a way, we really are living that life. In just a few months, we have covered the California coast, Joshua Tree National Park, Yosemite, and San Diego. "On average, we go out every other weekend, and the trip costs about $50 — gas plus campsite fees. Not bad at all."

The ease of daily life and the romance of travel make up every day of our truck camper life. Even when we take a day off and do not go anywhere, we jokingly call it "staying home for the day." The biggest change the truck camper life has brought is cutting down commute time.

Before joining the truck camper crowd, my daily routine included over an hour of commuting to the office. I used to describe my rental life like this: "The same route, every single day."

On move-in day, we even bought confetti and threw a little moving-in party. Of course, this lifestyle comes with a price. To save on rent, reduce commute time, and get a more comfortable living experience, we started doing our homework a full year in advance. We looked into different models and performance specs, learned about installation, and eventually bought the TP06B Fabric Pop-Up Truck Topper that we both loved. We even named our truck camper "Freedom" — this vehicle carries our life.

Our TP06B truck topper does not have much space, but it has everything we need. Once the pop-up roof is raised, there is enough headroom to stand up inside. The sliding bed panel pulls out into a comfortable double bed with a high-density mattress. Three-sided access makes grabbing gear effortless. It is packed with everything we imagined our home could be.

For us, wherever the truck camper is, home is. But this lifestyle, while drawing plenty of envious looks, has also sparked no small amount of controversy online.

To many people, this is not a life worth calling "living." Because a truck camper has limited space and amenities, sometimes for the simple convenience of dumping trash, we have to park near campsites with dump stations... Before you even get to enjoy the supposedly cozy lodging experience, just thinking about these daily hassles is enough to kill half the mood.

Some think we are running away from reality. But for my boyfriend and me, this is exactly the opposite — we are actively choosing the life we want. Whether this is a short-term transition or a long-term plan, we have not thought that far ahead.

So is this life worth it? Going back to the beginning of this story, our answer, right here and now, is: yes. At least, beneath what looks like a compromise with reality, there is an unshakable longing for a better life.

As I always say — "Whether you are living in a truck camper or renting an apartment, just live every day with your whole heart."
